What is 10 Gigabit Ethernet? Benefits of Switching to 10 GbE

10 gigabit ethernet is a high-tech ultra-fast network system. 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports are based on the IEEE 802.3ae standard by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This technology can transfer about 10 gigabits of data per second, which is useful for high-speed data transmission between different switches, routers, computers and storage devices. This type of high speed communication is used in real time video editing, 4k editing, data center, cloud computing. Also useful for fast large file transfer. Each computer on a 10GbE network does not need separate storage. In this case there is a centrally server storage. From which every computer works with data. All the work is so fast that it seems that the user is working with data from the internal hard disk or SSD of his computer.

Traditional Ethernet vs 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE)

Traditional ethernet is usually used in local area network or lan. lan means local area network when multiple computers, servers and various computer components together in a very small area of about 100 meters radius create a network called lan. 100 mb of data is transferred per second in the normal lan network used i.e. 100 mbps speed. High speed routers that are used today have gigabit ethernet ports. As a result these routers support 1 gbps speed. However, to get this speed, you have to use Cat 6 or Cat 6A cable.

Various internet service providers are currently offering 1 GBPS internet connection at home. So 1 gigabit ethernet port must be present on router and computer.

10 Gigabit Ethernet is a new telecommunications technology capable of transferring 10 billion bits of data per second. That is, this technology works 10 times faster than a capable Gigabit Ethernet port. Fiber optic or 10Gb lan cable is used here for high bandwidth and fast data communication. 10Gb Ethernet transmits data in full-duplex mode. That is, data is sent and received simultaneously. But in the case of ordinary traditional Ethernet, data reception and transmission are not simultaneous. That means there is no need for Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection, a protocol to transmit data over a 10GbE network. This 10 GbE technology is limited to data centers, labs, production houses etc. Currently, no service provider can provide this kind of speed in terms of data transmission. However, this 10Gb Ethernet is currently comparable with standard Ethernet networks. So if your computer doesn’t have 10Gb Ethernet port then you can connect to the network but you won’t get enough speed.

Cost of 10 Gb Ethernet network

Deploying a 10 Gb Ethernet network is very expensive. The equipment and infrastructure used for this technology is costly. However, with the increasing demand for high-speed internet, many organizations are using it. As a result, the necessary equipment is gradually becoming available in the market and the price is decreasing.

Instrument needs for 10Gb Ethernet network

All the switches used in this system support 10GbE which is much more expensive than gigabit switches. Moreover, a 10Gb lan cable cannot connect directly to the computer. Because the lan port of the computer’s motherboard supports up to 1 Gbps or a maximum of 2.5 Gbps. So to get the maximum speed, you have to install a 10 GB ethernet lan card on the motherboard which is quite expensive. But if you have a Mac Studio then there is no need to buy the card separately as the Mac Studio has an inbuilt 10 GbE card.

In this technology cat 6a or cat 7 RJ45 lan cable is used for high-speed and protected data transmission. NASH server is used to store data in this very expensive system.

10 GbE and Fiber optics

10Gb Ethernet can be implemented in two ways, fiber optic, and copper cable. In terms of data communication, fiber optics can send data over long distances (40 km) without any loss. Moreover, fiber optic provides much higher bandwidth. In this method, since the data is transmitted through the laser light signal, the surrounding electromagnetic waves cannot create noise at all. The installation cost of this fiber optic system is very high. Therefore copper cabling method is used in the case of small networks to reduce cost.
